Just saw this now!
It has been a long time coming. Lol. Mel Gibson is set to release a sequel to The Passion of the Christ. It is titled The Resurrection of the Christ.
But there are a few changes though. The actor who played Jesus, Jim Caviezel, has reportedly been replaced by Jaakko Ohtonen. The reason shared was that Caviezel, now 57, was considered a bit older for the role. For him to play Jesus again, he would have had to be de-aged, hence the decision to use someone more age-appropriate. Also, the part of Mary Magdalene, originally portrayed by Monica Bellucci, is now being played by Mariela Garriga.
I remember when The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004. Everybody wanted to see it, yet many of us couldn't bring ourselves to watch it because of how gory some of the scenes were. Those scenes where Christ was flogged and His experience on the cross... they made sure to make it as realistic as possible.
It was played during one of the open-air crusades organised by my school fellowship at the UNEC grounds — IJ Airport, I think, was the venue.
Even till today, I still can't bring myself to watch those scenes, but I am reminded of how deep my King's love runs for me.
What the movie depicted is nothing close to what Jesus truly went through for me and you.
I am extra excited that there is a sequel, and it is reportedly going to be released as two films: Part One opens in theatres on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027, and Part Two will follow on the next Ascension Day, May 25, 2028.
I look forward to it 😊
