Meet saint Death, the god of the fastest growing religion in the world

The Mexicans call her La Santa Muerta meaning 'Sacred Death' or 'Holy Death'. 

Saint Death is a skeletal figure that looks like the grim reaper holding a scythe and a globe like and dressed like the typical virgin Mary statue of the Catholic church.

It is a mixture of Catholic and Aztec religion where devotees crawl on their knees and leave tequila, incense, rum, beer, cigarettes, cash, flower and candy at her shrine. She is associated with healing, protection and safe delivery to the afterlife by devotees.
 
Santa Muerte worship contains many rituals used at the Vatican eg rosaries and candles. They are said to invoke the name of God, the Father, Christ, the Holy virgin and saint Micheal the arch angel in their petitions to Santa Muerte.

The devotees say she is powerful and reputed to grant swift favors to prostitutes, drug cartels, police etc, hence people prefer to pray to her than the Virgin Mary.

Though many of the devotees call themselves Catholics, the Catholic church frowns on this cult. But the devotees believe they are not satanists, they don't worship the devil, they are not witches, they are not evil and that they have a lot of faith. Misguided much?

Vice.com claims that the cult Our Lady of the Holy death is the fastest growing religion in the world with about 10-12 million devotees and she's only been public for 12 years.

Before then, Santa Muerte worship was clandestine and done privately in the home until 2001 when one woman, Enriqueta Romero, made it public.
